Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Raynor-compatible cables and drums across Dallas, with most replacements running $130 – $250 installed. A failed cable usually announces itself with a door that jerks, hangs crooked, or slams down on one side, and if you’re seeing that, you’ll want us out the same day before the other cable takes the full load and fails too. The good news: this is a repair we do constantly, and we carry the parts on the truck so there’s no week-long wait while your door sits half-open.

Most Dallas homeowners discover the problem when they hear a loud snap, then watch the door slam shut or refuse to budge. What actually happened: one of the two steel lift cables snapped, usually because the drum it wraps around has worn grooves, the cable has rusted through after years of Texas humidity, or the door came off its track for just a second and pinched the cable. The drum, which looks like a grooved spool mounted above each side of the door, spools and unspools the cable as the door moves. When either part goes, the door can’t lift evenly, and the torsion spring suddenly has nothing to pull against on one side.

We are an independent Dallas service company, not a Raynor dealer, and we match your door to the correct cable length, drum profile, and weight rating rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all part. Aaron Teague and the crew have done enough of these to tell you what failed just by looking at the wear pattern.

Which Raynor Models This Applies To

Raynor builds several residential lines, and the cable-and-drum setup is not universal across them. The most common in Dallas homes are the Centura, Relante, DecoDraft, ShowCase, and AP 200 / AP 138 series, along with the builder-grade Prestige line from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Each series runs a slightly different drum diameter and cable length depending on door height (typically 7 ft or 8 ft), door weight, and whether the spring system is torsion or extension.

If you open the garage door and look at the metal end bearing plate above the door, you’ll usually find a Raynor label with the model series. No label? The drum itself will have a cast or stamped part number on its face, often starting with a letter prefix. We can also work backward from the cable: a 7-ft residential Raynor typically uses a 1/8-inch or 3/32-inch aircraft-grade cable around 8 ft 6 in. long, but 8-ft doors, low-headroom track kits, and heavier ShowCase models use longer, often heavier-gauge cable. Guessing here is how doors end up crooked.

For Raynor specifically, we almost always recommend the OEM drum and an OEM-spec cable rather than a generic aftermarket drum. Raynor cuts their drum grooves to match their cable gauge, and a mismatched aftermarket drum will shred a new cable in months. Cables are a different story: a quality 7×19 strand aircraft cable in the correct length and diameter performs identically to the Raynor-branded one at a lower price, and we’re honest about when that’s the right call.

Signs Your Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door jerks to one side as it opens or closes. One cable has stretched or started slipping out of its drum groove, so one side is lifting faster than the other. Left alone, the cable will eventually jump the drum entirely and the door will drop hard on that corner.
  • The door hangs visibly crooked when stopped halfway. This usually means one cable has already come off the drum and is dangling loose behind the track. Do not keep running the door when you see this; each cycle bends the track further out of square.
  • You hear a snap, then a loud slam. That’s a cable letting go under tension. The door falls on the remaining cable and spring, which are not built to take that load alone. Stop using the door and call us.
  • The cable looks frayed or rusty where it wraps around the drum. Dallas humidity, especially in older garages without ventilation, rusts cables from the inside out. Fraying is your warning: the cable is maybe a dozen cycles from failure.
  • You see fresh metal shavings on the floor under either side of the door. This is the drum wearing against the end bearing plate or the cable sawing into a seized drum. Either way, something is grinding that should be spinning smoothly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, a Raynor cable and drum replacement runs $130 – $250 for the common single-side repair, and $200 – $450 when we’re doing both cables and both drums. We always recommend replacing both cables at once, even if only one snapped; the other has seen the exact same number of cycles and will fail on the same timeline. Drums we replace as a pair because a worn groove on one side means the other is not far behind.

That price includes the parts, the labor, a full check of the spring’s tension and a rebalance of both sides, plus our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. What drives the range: a 7-ft door on a standard Raynor AP series is on the lower end. An 8-ft or heavy insulated ShowCase door, or one with a low-headroom kit, is on the higher end because the parts cost more and the alignment work takes longer.

Here’s what you get before any work starts: a written price, by us, in your hand. That is the exact number on the invoice unless we find something structural you need to see and approve first. No verbal estimates, no surprise line items. We put it in writing because you deserve to know the number before a single bolt comes off.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect the cables and drums with the door closed. Look at the cable where it wraps the drum, check for fraying, rust scaling, or a cable that looks loose instead of seated tightly in the groove. If the door is stuck halfway or you can see a dangling cable, that is where the safe route ends. The lift cables on a Raynor work against the full tension of the torsion spring, which is wound tight even when the door is open. A cable that slips while you are working near it lets that stored energy go in an instant, and the results can mean a broken hand, a snapped finger, or worse. This is the one repair where we will not walk you through a DIY workaround, because there is not a safe one.

If you are in Dallas and the door is down, that is enough. You don’t need to touch anything. Call us at (972) 362-1457 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician with the right Raynor cable and drum in the truck. We’ll show you the worn part and the new part before we put it in, and we’ll explain what actually failed in plain English.
